LAW859: Heritage Law and Policy

This unit examines the concept of heritage and the various mechanisms for conservation of different types of cultural heritage including global efforts to conserve built heritage, intangible cultural heritage, underwater heritage, movable tangible heritage and Indigenous heritage. International initiatives for heritage conservation are examined and the implementation challenges in developed, developing and socialist market economies are comparatively assessed. Legal regimes for heritage conservation at the national, state and local levels are also examined and case studies are used to illustrate the policy tensions inherent in environmental decision making in this area.
