2010 Course Handbook

ICOM891: Glocalisation and Communication Technologies

This unit deals with the dichotomy of communication technologies that both facilitate globalisation and bind people into smaller and smaller communities and groups, often times creating political and social friction. Recent studies have focused on how global technologies do not always lead to inclusive communication but are more often employed to create exclusive groups. In the context of some of the discourses on globalisation, this unit details how global technologies such as the internet are employed for narrow and sectarian needs, leading on the one hand to what Andy Warhol famously termed '15 minutes of fame' and on the other to Benedict Anderson's 'long distance nationalism' that is more often than not leading to disastrous consequences in the present world.
