2010 Course Handbook
ICOM811: Communication and Social, Economic and Political Development
This unit examines processes of international communication within the context of social, political and economic development. It considers how definitions of development are conceived and supported, and positions these discussions within the parameters of contemporary global media. These ideas are explored through three key modules: the discursive convergence of global communications, modernisation and development; the political economy of global communications; and contemporary expressions of 'glocal' processes. The unit thus considers notions of development through broader inquiries into the logic, language and dynamics of global communications in the 21st century. As they examine such phenomena from various perspectives, students will work towards a group presentation: this will require students to link the theories, arguments and examples discussed in the unit to a contemporary case study; students will therefore appreciate how the politics and philosophies canvassed throughout the semester surface within the context of contemporary global communications.
