Advanced Spanish IV - SPN404

This unit offers an overview of contemporary Spanish and Latin American literature throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Students will analyse works from the most distinguished Spanish and Latin American writers to further develop their knowledge of key socio-historical developments in the last centuries, as well as to learn about the latest literary and artistic trends in the regions. We will discuss the representation of politically charged moments through the dictatorship novel, and study movements such as the Latin American boom, and the Crack generation. Lastly, we will read the latest in crime and science fiction in order to identify the issues concerning the newer generations, such as immigration and biopolitics, among others. The unit may focus around a specific genre or theme in order to develop deeper knowledge on certain issues that may well be put in contrast with the global and Australian contexts. Students need to have a solid knowledge of Spanish and be able to understand, discuss and present a topic using fluent written and oral Spanish.
