Overview and Aims of the Program The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Leadership focuses on internationally recognised non-technical skills essential to the development of competency in clinical leadership. This part time program has 2 required units, the first of which, Hospital Management focuses on the integration of hospital management with clinical practice. The second unit, explores the practices and philosophies underpinning Leadership and Motivation and encourages students to develop complex thinking skills. Students can then choose from units covering other key areas such as Safety and Quality, Ethics and Professionalism and Negotiation, Theory and Practice. The ability to choose will allow students the opportunity to identify and fill gaps in their own education and experience. The program of study is designed to complement the students' academic interests and professional roles.

Program Learning Outcomes By the end of this program it is anticipated you should be able to:

1. Apply an advanced knowledge of established theories underpinning leadership and motivation to clinical practice (K, P, C, J)
2. Independently, identify and implement strategies to diagnose and overcome leadership issues in a care setting (K, T, P, E)
3. With a high level of autonomy and accountability, effectively integrate hospital management principles in to clinical practice (P, C, J)
4. Apply cognitive reasoning skills to successfully investigate, analyse and implement change management strategies (T, P, C)
5. Communicate management decisions to effectively implement change (K, C, J).
Learning and Teaching Methods A high degree of independent learning is required for this program, where you will have the opportunity to relate learning to your role in health care. Through seminars you will work collaboratively within groups to analyse case studies related to the overall clinical management of the patient and look at procedural shortfalls and potential solutions to them. You will explore aspects of leadership in a clinical setting where you will prepare for seminars by reading set materials and researching for relevant information online.

The optional units allow you to explore aspects of safety and quality, and ethics and professionalism in health care, with the opportunity to engage in further management study. These units provide a blended learning approach of online learning activities combined with collaborative tutorial sessions facilitated by the unit convenor. You will critically appraise literature and develop scholarly writing skills.
Assessment Assessment is orientated towards the area of healthcare you are interested in. The hospital management unit assessment will include analysis of case studies and a critique of a major initiative using change management framework. You will also be involved in a small group activity where you will develop and present a business case for a change initiative. Leadership and Motivation assessment will involve the completion of an action learning plan, where following a capability audit of your strengths and weaknesses in leadership, you will identify your development needs and prepare a detailed plan of how you will address these areas for development. Extending upon this, you will produce a report on the dynamics and potential of your team. The major assessment task for this unit is a comprehensive written report presenting an evaluation of the implementation and outcomes of the action learning plan and the team development report.

Depending on which optional units you choose formative and summative assessment could be in the form of written reports, group and individual presentations, case studies, a reflective log, quizzes and essays.
